FORTUNATE
Thirteen-year-old Danny Schumacher thinks middle school will be perfect. He’s popular, athletic and in class with his best friends, including the girl of his dreams, Hannah Crawford. Everything was going great…Until the new kid, Ray Fletcher, showed up.
Ray is from Wisconsin. He knows no one and latches onto Hannah with an unhealthy obsession. At first, Danny and his friends shrug off Ray’s quirkiness and fixation as nothing more than wanting to fit in. With each passing day, however, their tolerance wanes, while their frustration flourishes.
Ray would sit next to Hannah at lunch, be her Study Buddy for tests and partner with her for group work in class…ALL things that Hannah had previously done with Danny. Not wanting hurt the new kid’s feelings, Hannah initially plays along, trying to be a good friend, putting herself in the new kid’s shoes, empathizing.
Danny, Mikey and the others feel Hannah is naive and not seeing Ray Fletcher and his motives for what they really are: the opportunity to replace Danny in Hannah’s life. Hannah refuses to see the truth, only seeing Danny’s jealousy rear its ugly head. When neither the subtle approach, nor being directly blunt work with Ray, Hannah, her nerves frayed, decides enough is enough.
With the annual Halloween Costume Dance approaching, Danny, Hannah and their friends plan to teach Ray Fletcher a lesson he’ll never forget! Mirroring Edgar Allan Poe’s classic, The Cask of Amontillado, FORTUNATE, travels down the treacherous road of Middle School, fitting in, navigating the emotional roller-coaster that is being a teenager and the dark places fear and jealousy take us.
